Why is Kaduna Important?
Kaduna occupies a unique place in Nigeria's story.
For centuries, it has been a meeting point for traders, scholars, farmers, artisans, rulers, and explorers. It is home to one of Africa's oldest known civilizations, the ancient Nok Civilization, whose remarkable terracotta sculptures continue to fascinate archaeologists around the world.
Kaduna also became one of the most important administrative centres during the colonial period and later grew into a major centre for education, agriculture, manufacturing, and defence.
Today, Kaduna remains one of Nigeria's most diverse states, bringing together many ethnic groups, languages, and traditions.
Where is Kaduna?
Kaduna State lies in Nigeria's North-West geopolitical zone.
It shares boundaries with:

Its central location has made it a crossroads for commerce and travel for generations.
The state capital, Kaduna City, is approximately 190 km north of Abuja by road.
How Kaduna Got Its Name
The name "Kaduna" is believed to have come from the Hausa word "Kada", meaning crocodile.
The Kaduna River, which flows through the state capital, was once known for its crocodiles, leading local communities to associate the river with these powerful reptiles.
When the British established an administrative headquarters there in the early 20th century, they adopted the river's name for the growing city, and later for the state itself.
Even today, the river remains one of Kaduna's defining natural landmarks.

A Journey Through Time
Imagine travelling back over 2,500 years.
Long before Nigeria became a nation, long before many famous kingdoms rose across West Africa, skilled craftsmen were already living in what is now Kaduna State.
They shaped clay into beautiful sculptures, smelted iron, farmed the land, and built thriving communities.
These early people belonged to what historians now call the Nok Civilization, one of the earliest known civilizations in sub-Saharan Africa.
Their discoveries changed the way historians understood African history.
Centuries later, powerful Hausa kingdoms flourished across the region. Among them was the Kingdom of Zazzau (now Zaria), remembered around the world through the legendary Queen Amina, whose courage and military leadership made her one of Africa's most celebrated historical figures.
During the colonial era, Kaduna became an important railway and administrative centre. Roads, schools, hospitals, and government institutions expanded rapidly, attracting people from many parts of Nigeria.
After Nigeria gained independence in 1960 and Kaduna State was created in 1967, the state continued to grow into a centre for education, agriculture, commerce, manufacturing, and innovation.
Today, Kaduna proudly balances its rich traditions with a vision for the future.
